Rodney Smith

With his unmistakable visual language, Rodney Smith is one of the most important photographers of the late 20th and early 21st century. The student of Walker Evans became known primarily for his works for renowned magazines and fashion journals, but their artistic quality and originality far surpass the level of commissioned works. Smith's images radiate a poetic power that transports the audience into fascinating worlds between dream and reality through the harmony of elegance, subtle humor and technical and compositional precision. His staged photographs are often reminiscent of the enigmatic paintings of surrealist Rene Magritte. As a convinced black and white photographer, Smith only discovered color photography late in life and proved his great mastery of light. With over 120 exhibits from all phases of his work, the exhibition provides the first comprehensive insight into Rodney Smith's diverse oeuvre in Germany.
