Special presentation of the collection to mark this year's Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Basel. Highlight is Ugo Rondinone's rainbow light sculpture we are poems, 2011.
The Fondation Beyeler is hosting a special presentation of its collection to mark this year’s Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Basel. Inspired by the legendary song Over the Rainbow from the famous musical film The Wizard of Oz (1939), the exhibition pays homage to the music, colourfulness and diversity that characterise the ESC.
The rainbow, a fascinating natural phenomenon created by the interaction of sun and rain, is the central theme of this collection showcase, which revolves around light, water and the power of colour. Continuing in this vein, Ugo Rondinone’s spectacular rainbow light sculpture we are poems, 2011, will also be installed on the roof of the museum especially for the ESC.
It was the ancient goddess of the rainbow, Iris, whom Auguste Rodin elevated to a revolutionary figure of modern art. Inspired by this, the collection showcase at the Fondation Beyeler displays a colourful spectrum of works by famous artists, which come together to form a multifaceted and unifying ‘rainbow’. From Claude Monet to Pablo Picasso, from Andy Warhol to Marlene Dumas and Wolfgang Tillmans – the exhibition brings together masterpieces of modern and contemporary art.
Works by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Mark Rothko, Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, Marlene Dumas, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Elizabeth Peyton and Wolfgang Tillmans will be on display.
