How can contemporary art help us understand our present? The Kunstmuseum Basel raises this question with a presentation throughout the entire buidling Gegenwart: On display are works from the museum's own collection, the Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation, and the Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt collection. Some of the works were created specifically for the building, which opened in 1980 as one of the first museums of contemporary art.
The selection of works tackles social issues—critically, polyphonically, and playfully at the same time. Artists from Basel, Berlin, Cape Town, Mexico City, and New Delhi address personal, social, and ecological living conditions. They interrogate the construction of realities and narratives, shed light on the relationship between the individual and the community, the role of images in everyday life, and the potential of physical perception.
