Marie Strieffler’s biography is emblematic of the first half of the 20th century. As the only child of the artist Heinrich Strieffler, she received extensive support from her father. After graduating from high school—as the only woman in her graduating class—she studied at the Academy in Munich. When this was no longer possible in 1944 due to the war, she returned to Landau, where she worked under her father’s guidance until his death in 1949.
Marie Strieffler found her subjects in her personal surroundings, whether in the Palatinate or during her numerous study trips throughout Europe and North America. Her interest always centered on people, their traditions, and their daily lives, as well as the landscape and the natural world that shaped them. She bequeathed her house, her artistic estate, and that of her father to the city of Landau, with the charge to preserve this legacy and, above all, to honor the memory of her father’s artistic work.
