The Peasants' War was more than just a subject for HAP Grieshaber: "that is my existence, that is the existence of the people." Grieshaber saw himself as a 'homme engagé', closely connected to the peasant uprising through his origins and concerns. Grieshaber's intensive preoccupation with the subject began in the early 1960s. In 1963, he created the large-format woodcut diptych Peasants' War, the printing blocks of which, together with the woodcut of the black plate, Grieshaber implemented in the ten-part documenta wall in 1964. The work subsequently passed into private ownership. The Kunstmuseum Reutlingen | Spendhaus now offers the first opportunity in over sixty years to see these 240 cm high Peasants' War works outside Erkersreuth Castle. Together with woodcuts, portfolios, letters, posters and maquettes, they are being presented for the first time in the context of Grieshaber's engagement with the subject of the Peasants' War.
