Arnold Böcklin (1827–1901), born in Basel, created visual worlds filled with mythological figures, fantasy, and mysterious landscapes that continue to fascinate us today. To mark the 200th anniversary of his birth, this exhibition invites visitors to discover his work with fresh eyes, beyond the myth. Approximately 150 works showcase Böcklin as an unconventional artist who broke new ground with his use of color, composition, and subject matter, and who had a lasting influence on 19th-century art. The highlight is the first—and likely only—reunion of the four surviving versions of *The Isle of the Dead*—one of the most famous paintings in art history.
