Conceptual sculptor Andrea Pichl has been awarded the Ernst Franz Vogelmann Prize for Sculpture 2026, the first time the prestigious award has gone to an artist who was born in the GDR and grew up in East Berlin. This dual biography provides the backdrop for her artistic work, which deals with the interrelationship between public and private space in the context of architecture and urban planning. In her works, the "change in the meaning of public and private life before and after German reunification" can be experienced. Architectural structures, in combination with photographs and drawings, trace the contradictions of history and stories and at the same time illuminate economic, cultural and social dimensions in the relationship between East and West. In this way, highly questionable distortions such as the reciprocal transfer of capital, goods and services come into focus and point to what has remained hidden and explicitly concealed from the general public.
