Content
How do flowers, birds, and raindrops end up on clothing? The Museum der Kulturen Basel explains this step by step in its new exhibition “Tie-dye: Folded, Sewn, Dyed.” The exhibition showcases various patterning techniques used around the world. Shibori is just one of them.
Curator Stephanie Lovász would like to share her enthusiasm for the tie-dye technique and the museum’s diverse textile collection with you this evening. She’ll guide you through the exhibition, which focuses on the craft itself. She’ll provide insight into how fabrics are folded, tied, pressed, and sewn—and how these techniques result in exemplary patterns. All it takes is enough time, plenty of knowledge, experience, and imagination—plus a little math.
Of course, you’ll also get to see quite a few masterpieces. On the catwalk, it’s not models in designer dresses strutting their stuff, but artfully patterned blouses, skirts, jackets, scarves, shoes, and kimonos.
