Lisbon is located in a beautiful bay at the mouth of the Tagus River into the Atlantic Ocean. The city was founded by the Phoenicians as early as 1200 BC, making it the oldest city in Western Europe. Since then, however, it has modernized tremendously while retaining all traces of its past. The winding alleyways of the Mouraria and Alfama districts, for example, are a reminder of the Moorish presence, while the heart of Lisbon beats just two steps away in the large, bustling avenues of the Baixa. But the city to which the great writer Fernando Pessoa was so passionately attached hides other treasures. The authentic and charming districts of Rossio, Chiado and Bairro Alto are joined by museums of great wealth, including the famous Gulbenkian Foundation. Around the Belém Tower and the Hieronymite Monastery, masterpieces of Manueline art, Lisbon finally opens up to the sea and awaits the return of the caravels on a misty morning...
