Content

A century ago, in 1925, the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes opened in Paris, associated with what came to be known as Art Deco, a major style that would conquer the world. Art Deco shone through in architecture and the decorative arts, but its easily identifiable illustrations have also had a lasting influence on our collective imagination. The exhibition Élégance et modernité: l'illustration au temps de l'Art Déco, at Strasbourg's Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire (15 March - 22 June 2025), explores this wealth of graphic art, thanks in particular to the loan of a major private collection, complemented by a section on Alsace. The exhibition explores not only the 1925 exhibition, but also magazines, advertising, graphic design, communications and the art of the book, and concludes with a look at the revival of contemporary interest in the movement.
