What do drinking and cuddling have in common? Both are controlled by two important hormones of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland, vasopressin and oxytocin. Vasopressin keeps the water content of our body constant, while oxytocin has many different functions, including being very important for our social behavior, in which it increases trust in the other person and controls our emotions.
Vasopressin deficiency is well known - in diseases of the hypothalamus or pituitary gland, a lack of vasopressin can lead to dehydration ("drying out") if there is not enough water available. These conditions must be treated quickly.
But is there also a deficiency of the cuddle hormone oxytocin? What effect does this have? In whom can this occur? And can such a deficiency be treated? You will receive answers to these questions in this lecture.
