This guided tour looks back at a decisive period in the history of Ronchamp and the Colline de Bourlémont: the events of October 1944, at the time of the liberation.

Through the story of those days marked by fighting and destruction, the tour sheds light on the context in which the old chapel was destroyed, paving the way for an entirely new architectural and artistic project.

The guided tour places these events in a broader context, that of post-war France. After the war, the country was faced with the need to rebuild, both materially and symbolically. Places of worship were no exception. Everywhere, the question of their future, their form and their meaning in a world profoundly disrupted by war, is being raised. The Ronchamp chapel reconstruction project is part of this climate of questioning.

Le Corbusier's arrival in Ronchamp is explained by this desire for renewal. A major architect of the XXᵉ century, he was asked to imagine a radically different chapel. The tour looks back at the conditions of this encounter and the expectations surrounding the project. Le Corbusier did not seek to rebuild identically, but to propose a new response, in keeping with the spirit of the times and developments in sacred art.

During the tour, participants will discover how the Notre-Dame du Haut chapel, inaugurated in 1955, is fully in line with the post-war revival of sacred art. Its architecture breaks with traditional forms. These choices reflect a desire to renew architectural language in the service of the spiritual, emphasizing emotion, light and the relationship with the landscape.

The chapel also reflects a profound change in the conception of sacred art. After the war, many artists and architects sought to create works capable of meeting the expectations of a society in search of meaning. At Ronchamp, architecture becomes a space for experience and contemplation, where light, silence and form contribute to a sensitive approach to the sacred.

Accessible to all, this tour will appeal to history buffs and architecture and heritage enthusiasts alike.
