Ausstellung Georg Elser: Ich habe den Krieg verhindern wollen
Wolfgang Benz is a German historian of contemporary history and an internationally recognized representative of prejudice research, anti-Semitism research and National Socialism research. In his new book Alone against Hitler, Wolfgang Benz describes the life and deeds of Georg Elser, who realized much earlier than most Germans that Hitler's regime meant war and ruin. In order to prevent this, he decided to carry out an assassination attempt, constructed a bomb with an ignition mechanism - more technically perfect than the officers of the military resistance - and hid it unnoticed in a pillar of the Bürgerbräukeller. Today, Elser is almost as famous as the Scholl siblings and Count Stauffenberg, the hero of July 20, 1944 - but as a person he remains unknown. In his lecture, Wolfgang Benz provides an insight into Elser's life and thus catches up on what is long overdue: a scientifically sound biography of the ordinary man from the people who came to realize the criminal nature of the Nazi regime and decided to resist to the last consequence.
