Friday Beyeler: Phyto Futures – Forms of Being Alive
What does it mean to be alive? What forms can life take? As part of Friday Beyeler, artist and scientist Monica Ursina Jäger brings together various voices from art, nature and science to reflect on different forms of being alive. Phyto Futures invites you to listen to the whispers of microorganisms, immerse yourself in the rhythms of forests and develop new ideas for inhabiting the planet together with plants, microorganisms and minerals. The program includes a video screening, a sound performance and conversations.

Monica Ursina Jäger's artistic work is characterized by a multidisciplinary reflection on concepts of space, landscape and architecture. Using drawing, collage, installation and video, she examines the multi-layered relationships in ecosystems. Fluctuating between the intuitive, the narrative and the factual, Jäger questions processes of transformation, arrangement and translation by dissolving the boundaries between artistic and scientific knowledge production. In her works, she traces the entanglements in post-natural landscapes, the workings of organic and inorganic matter and the complexity of time.

Monica Ursina Jäger is a permanent faculty member at the IUNR Institute for Environment and Natural Resources at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW. Since 2016, the transdisciplinary team has been developing new forms of dialog between artistic practices and scientific research to address issues of ecology, climate change and planetary regeneration. Projects include urban ecology, outdoor exhibitions and climate-resilient gardens.
