Amedeo Maria Schwaller presents on shō, a solo piece for the eponymous mouth organ, associated with Gagaku, the classical court music of Japan. The work explores the relationship between the peculiarities of the shō’s organology and the performer’s poetic subjectivity. In a ritualistic fashion, minimalist and unamplified, fragments of traditional chords are performed, drawing on compositional principles that also inform Schwaller’s involvement with Catherine Christer Hennix’s Kamigaku Ensemble and blurring the boundaries between ancient and modern musical ideas. As the piece unfolds, the instrument gradually drifts out of tune, its diminishing tonal capacity determining the duration of the performance.

Werner Durand / Hilary Jeffery / Marcus Pal, in their first public performance as a trio, present work emerging out of the practices of sustained tuning developed by Catherine Christer Hennix in her ensembles. Long sustained tones, tuned according to the principles of just intonation, gradually fuse with and dissolve into Hennix’s infinitary composition Soliton(e) Star / Zero-Time, which provides the sonic ground state for the performance. Each musician brings a distinct and deep relationship to Hennix’s work. Jeffery plays, composes and teaches music, and specialises in brass instruments. He and Hennix co-founded Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage. Pal is a composer and artist whose work focuses on the phenomenology of possibility as it manifests in harmonic perception. He assisted and collaborated with Hennix in a variety of contexts. Durand is a composer, performer and instrument builder working with saxophone and wind instruments of his own design. He worked with Hennix both in a duo and in Born of Six, their trio with his late partner Amelia Cuni.

[ _ _ _ ], the network music ensemble formed by artists Li Song, Shuoxin Tan and Jia Liu, describes itself as ‘three placeholders sitting in a room between empty spaces’. Founded in 2020, they explore what happens when the Borromean knot is applied to network structures for collaborative algorithmic composition. Li is a musician and software developer based in London. Tan was born in Beijing and works as a composer and sound artist in Cologne. Liu is a composer and computer music performer living in Karlsruhe. The three members share an interest in algorithmic acoustics and composition, SuperCollider and live coding, and have previously performed together at venues such as Cafe OTO in London; iv project space in Brussels, The Grey Space in the Middle in The Hague and St. Michael in Cologne as part of Ambientfestival.

4 pm
Ellen Arkbro presents a new piece for organ, developed especially for the occasion. She is a composer and musician from Stockholm working with the perceptual effects of sustained, closely voiced harmony. Drawing on her studies in just intonation, as well as jazz, blues and experimental composition, she employs acoustic instruments to build slowly unfolding chordal structures in which small shifts in resonance take on an almost physical presence. She has studied with La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela in the Dream House and with Marc Sabat in Berlin, and performed in Catherine Christer Hennix's Kamigaku Ensemble. Her site-specific work has recently been presented at Dia Art Foundation and Greene Naftali in New York, Barbican in London, Biennale Musica in Venice, Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, Stockholm Concert Hall, Glasgow Cathedral, Julia Stoschek in Berlin and Sōgetsu Hall in Tokyo.
