Color, Glory and Beauty

presented by the Musée Unterlinden de Colmar (FR).

The online event will take place on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at 6:00 pm and is free of charge. The presentation will take place in French.

The event will be recorded.

CONTENTS

The exhibition places the Musée Unterlinden's collection of early paintings in the broader geographical context of the Upper Rhine: this territory, which corresponds more or less to present-day Alsace, stretches on either side of the Rhine, from the Vosges to the Black Forest, and from Strasbourg in the north to Basel in the south; it is home to wealthy cities with great economic dynamism, which were all major centers of artistic production: Basel, Colmar, Freiburg im Breisgau and Strasbourg.
The exhibition answers many of the questions visitors may have about such works: how were they produced in the 15th and 16th centuries? What functions did these paintings, now considered works of art, serve? What was the nature of the relationship between the painters and their patrons? He then invites his visitors to explore stylistically, seeking to help them grasp the specificities of each production center, indeed of each workshop, and the changes that took place over time in the tastes of commissioners and the proposals of artists.
