Founded in the 18th century, the Archaeological Museum is Strasbourg's oldest museum. Over three centuries of sometimes turbulent existence, it has amassed some very important collections. Housed in the basement of the Palais Rohan since the end of the 19th century, their variety and broad chronological scope make them one of the most important archaeological museums in France.

A complete overhaul of the museum's museography, carried out between 1988 and 1992, completely renewed the presentation and incorporated the most recent data from regional archaeological research. The collections continue to be enriched on a regular basis by the results of archaeological digs carried out throughout the region. Temporary exhibitions are organised to showcase the latest research and the most significant discoveries. In this way, the Archaeological Museum plays a key role in showcasing national and regional archaeological research on the doorstep of neighbouring Germany and Switzerland.
