30 Years: Vitra Design Museum
The Vitra Design Museum was founded in autumn 1989. Along with the Design Museum in London, which opened the same year, it was the first museum to be devoted exclusively to design, establishing a completely new type of institution. What began as a small, private initiative grew
over the years into one of the world’s leading museums for design and architecture. Today, the exemplary buildings by Frank Gehry and Herzog & de Meuron are as much a part of the museum’s identity as its collection, exhibitions, on-site publishing house, and global network of travelling exhibitions. On the occasion of its 30th birthday, the Vitra Design Museum is hosting an anniversary event featuring a panel discussion. Our guests will include prominent figures from the museum’s past and present, designers, colleagues, and many other interesting participants. Together we will look back on the last and offer a preview of the next 30 years. Come and celebrate with us!
