From 30th March, the Museum für Kunst und Technik des 19. Jahrhunderts is showing the exhibition " SCHEIN ODER SEIN. Der Bürger auf der Bühne des 19. Jahrhunderts" (TO BE OR NOT TO BE. The Citizen on the Stage of the 19th Century) - the celebratory exhibition of the Museum's 10th anniversary in Baden-Baden. In the course of the 19th century, court theatres were gradually replaced by city theatres. Plays now included themes taken from everyday life, from the present day, from normal citizens. The rise of the bourgeois theatre was accompanied by the increasing theatricalisation of everyday bourgeois life. Released from the rigid structure of the old system of estate, the citizen was now obliged to become his own protagonist. It no longer sufficed to merely render his innovative services in administration, business and science. They had to be displayed in a suitably impressive manner - In competition with many other equally industrious individuals,
