Metz

The museums in Metzwere founded in 1839 and exemplify a changing and unique history which is intertwined with the city's history in the 19th and 20th century. Ever since its foundation the museum has benefited from the generosity of several members of the scientific associations and theAcademy ofMetz which initiated scientific, archaeological and art collections.

Visitors can enjoy the variety of items which were collected over 160 years. The collection invites visitors on a journey through the early history and Gallo Romanic antique until the 19th century about the history and surroundings ofMetz. The museum showcases extraordinary sculptural and archaeological objects from the gallo-romantic hot pools, Merovingian objects and the choir screen of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains, medieval architecture and ceiling paintings, the attic of Chèvremont and a regional collection of sculptures. The collection of paintings comprises artworks from various European art movements from the Renaissance and the École de Metz and École de Paris. A history of the Jewish community inMetz complements the exhibition.
