Complementing the exhibition Wilhelm Lehmbruck. Variation and Perfection, the Staatsgalerie's Graphik Kabinett is presenting a selection of works on paper by Wilhelm Lehmbruck.
Further to sculptures and paintings, the oeuvre of this highly sensitive Expressionist includes numerous drawings and prints that should not be seen as directly related to his sculptures but as autonomous works in an equally autonomous medium. Etching was of particular importance to the artist: the technique lent itself to a nuanced and subtle linearity. Sensitive and expressive in equal measure, his figures show the different facets of human emotions.
The two exhibitions mark the acquisition of three sculptures and sixty-nine works on paper which had been on loan to the Staatsgalerie since 1960. The acquisition was made possible by the Museumsstiftung Baden-Württemberg, the Kulturstiftung der Länder and the Ernst von Siemens Kunststiftung.
