Portraits of women fighting against colonial slavery

In the world of colonial slavery, women slaves faced multiple discriminations, because they were women, because they were slaves, and because they were black. Of the 12 to 13 million Africans deported, 1/3 were women. Although a minority in the slave populations, they were nevertheless a fundamental social and cultural force in the slave worlds. Everywhere, they participated in the fight against slavery. Everywhere, they paid a heavy burden, yet their history remains poorly known. Come and discover the portraits of ten of them.
