The MAMCS and the Tomi Ungerer Museum – International Illustration Centre have joined forces to mount the exhibition « SurreAlice ». Borrowing its title from a text by Michel Remy, the exhibition deals with the reception of Lewis Carroll's work and its circulation in France and throughout Europe.

The Illustr'Alice exhibition, on the other hand, is devoted to illustrations from books on the Alice theme. It explores not only the world of children's books, in which Alice has been present since her first appearance in print, but also a perhaps less familiar style of humorous and satirical illustration. Many illustrators have taken over Alice's essential feature, nonsense, and adapted it in various modes of graphic expression.
The theme also takes on specific aspects determined by the artists' geo-cultural sensibilities and is treated very differently in Central Europe, France or the British Isles. The Alice motif has also served in press cartoons as a satirical medium for the purpose of social and political criticism, a graphic tradition that developed from the publication in 1902 of Clara in Blunderland illustrated by J. Stafford Ransome. It is this formal diversity, as well as the universality of the theme, that the exhibition aims to bring out. In an exhibition of some 150 original works and books, from museum institutions, libraries and private collections from France and Europe, are presented famous names in illustration from the end of the 19th century to the 2000s, as well as illustrators now forgotten or simply unknown. The public will also be able to discover the preparatory drawings of Icinori and Monster Chetwynd, as well as the work of a new generation of artists.
