"In March 1871, the deputy Victor Hugo was one of the first to evoke a revenge, and the words of the minister Léon Gambetta fuelled the bloody fever during patriotic speeches based on the protest of law and justice against force and iniquity. The theme of Revenge in fact resembles a political myth that gives rise to a strategy of regeneration in the military, educational and artistic fields. Images are produced, whether official or not, which support a certain state of mind of the populations in France and Germany. The exhibition helps to understand how, in 1914, this iconography influenced the behaviour and determination of the soldiers in the Great War.
