Re: Acquisition from Jewish Property

Provenance Research at the Landesmuseum Mainz

Between 1941 and 1943, the Gemäldegalerie and the Altertumsmuseum acquired 60 portraits, some 150 graphic prints and 10 items of furniture from the Reich Finance Administration. In a three-year research project the Landesmuseum has been systematically checking the provenance of these objects. This research revealed that they were confiscated from property belonging to citizens of Mainz and Darmstadt, who as Jews were the victims of racist persecution. The exhibition retraces the path of the objects to the museum, shows the role played by the Finance Administration in NS persecution, and in four case stories it casts light on the biographies of the objects as well as on the life stories of the owners.
