A native of Morez in the Jura, painter and teacher at the Besançon School of Fine Arts between 1954 and 1989, Jean Ricardon (1924-2018) navigated his entire career, in the words of the master of abstraction Malevich, on "the white, free sea stretching out before [him]", choosing white as the "mother or total colour" of his work.
From the emergence of white in his early works depicting snowy landscapes, reminiscent of the work of the 19th century masters, to the selection of white as a "material-matter", the exhibition at the Musée Courbet aims to explore Jean Ricardon's "path towards abstraction and white" and through a dialogue with his peers to penetrate, in the words of Michel Seuphor, "the profound meaning of white".
