Profiles in Art at the Upper Rhine: Bert Jäger on his 100th Birthday

A special tribute is to be paid to the work of the Freiburg artist Bert Jäger, who would have been 100 years old this year. His life is representative of an artist's fate in the 20th century: after studying at the Academy of Arts Karlsruhe, he joined the army and was taken prisoner by the Russians. He did not return until 1949 when he immediately started painting again, working as a photographer for Caritas International and as a commercial artist. His work is strongly influenced by the French avant-garde, by Informel and abstract expressionism and moves in the interplay between drawing and painting, image and language, colour fields and lines.
