Orientalist fascinations

Two men in turbans and blue djellaba discuss on the banks of the Nile. On the horizon, the setting sun adorns the great pyramids with flamboyant reflections. This seductive watercolour, the work of a unknown Montbeliard artist, shows the extraordinary enthusiasm of travellers, painters and writers for this captivating Orient. Landscapes and portraits tell of this incredibly fascinating place, the encounter of 'the Other', but also the experience of light or colour. They tell the story of these distant countries imagined or fantasized by the West, between naturalistic, picturesque or romantic visions, against a background of colonial expansion.
