THE MODERNISTS ARE COMING. DEGAS, MONET AND FRIENDS

THE COLLECTION OF THE JOHANNESBURG ART GALLERY
Exhibitions
Edgar Degas, Deux Danseuses, 1898
On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Kunsthalle Vogelmann, the municipal museums of Heilbronn are holding a special exhibition.
The title of the show is apposite as the pre-modern French artists from Camille Corot to Edgar Degas form the basis of the Johannesburg collection. It was assembled during the lifetime of Florence Lady Phillips (1863-1940), wife of the English mine owner Sir Lionel Phillips. During a stay in London, Lady Phillips' interest in Impressionist art grew and she acquired works by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Auguste Renoir, Paul Signac and Edouard Vuillard, among others. Over time, works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Francis Bacon as well as contemporary artists expanded the collection.
