Living Traditions

Singing at fountains, cracking whips, making lanterns, fishing out the stream or catching men: with these and other practices, the people of Aargau live their traditions. But the festive first day of school or the annual Christmas presents are also part of our cultural heritage. These customs shape our leisure time, our coexistence and our identity over generations.

All the pictures come from the Ringier picture archive, which houses around seven million press photographs from the years 1930 to 2000. The pictures from this archive allow us to look back into the past and present the best-known festivities, curious snapshots and many a forgotten Aargau custom.
