Light Displays in the Collections of the Museums of Montbéliard
In the semi-darkness of an interior, a young woman appears, captured in the light of a candle. Leaving her spinning wheel and spindle, she turns with tentative gestures to a half-open door...Farther back into the rooms we see the castle tower in flames, a moat in the moonlight, the beautiful Narcissus gazing at himself in a well or a brightly glittering stream in the undergrowth. The interplay of changing lights, whether natural or artificial, symbolic or divine, reveals landscapes, genre scenes, mythological subjects and religious scenes. Light beams, bright and dark, shadow effects and reflexes are displayed through a selection of paintings, prints, photographs, books and objects from the 17th to the 20th century from the collections of the museums of Montbéliard.
