Java - rainforests, volcanoes and mysterious temples. For over 1,000 years, Indonesia was the home of powerful kingdoms. Their legendary splendour comes to brilliant life in the jewellery made from the material that has entranced humankind for thousands of years: gold.
With "Java Gold" rem is now presenting some 400 treasures that coalesce into a panorama of Hindu and Buddhist arts and craftsmanship. Rings, bracelets and magnificent diadems were reserved for certain classes and life phases. In this society that expressed power and piety by means of gold, intricately adorned jewels had ritual and social functions that could be recognised from the motifs. Most of the jewellery, which has come from a private collection, is on show for the first time.
