At an early age, the German painter Georg Alfred Stockburger showed a talent for art, which was recognised and encouraged by his drawing teacher at secondary school. After training at the art academy in Stuttgart, he took part in several exhibitions and was invited by Max Liebermann to take part in the German Art Exhibition in Berlin. Nevertheless, he was unable to establish himself as an artist and trained as a doctor during the Second World War, thus circumventing his professional ban as an artist. After the war he devoted himself to new artistic ideas and began to depict the social roles of his fellow human beings as masks. Stockburger was an energetic artist who distinguished himself through numerous self-portraits as well as works in various techniques.
