Place Stanislas, the heart of intellectual life in 18th-century Nancy. An exhibition to mark the 40th anniversary of the inclusion of Place Stanislas, Place de la Carrière and Place d'Alliance on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
The Musée des Beaux-Arts is devoting an exhibition to the architecture and function of Place Stanislas in the mid-18th century. As an enlightened philanthropist keen to promote the dissemination of new ideas and the advancement of knowledge, Stanislas set up several prestigious foundations in the pavilions lining Place Royale, theatrically framing the statue of his son-in-law Louis XV: the Royal Library in 1750, the Royal Society of Sciences and Fine Arts in 1751, the Royal College of Medicine with its botanical garden in 1752, and a new Comedy Hall in 1755. The Place Royale, a veritable microcosm of the Enlightenment, is evoked through a selection of works drawn mainly from the rich collections of the Palace of the Dukes of Lorraine - Musée lorrain.

Un espace ludique propose en complément une découverte active des trois places inscrites au titre du patrimoine mondial. Cinq dispositifs thématiques d’expérimentation, de manipulation et de jeux permettent de familiariser petits et grands à la richesse de ce patrimoine afin d’en poursuivre l’exploration à l’extérieur du musée. On peut notamment y découvrir l’animation 3D réalisée par Maxime Santiago restituant l’aménagement de l’ensemble des trois places.
