Digital Imaginairies – Africas in Production

Research and exhibition project in Dakar, Johannesburg and Karlsruhe
Exhibitions

What Africa was, is and could be is characterized by collective practices. If you follow the postcolonial visionary Édouard Glissant (1928-2011), then these »Africas« can be understood as a technically mediated network of relationships, which project far beyond the physical borders of the continent. Rather than a single vision, Africa seems to be more of a relational category, which contains a multitude of contradictory possibilities.

The »Digital Imaginairies – Africas in Production« project takes these considerations as its starting point in order to highlight the significance of digital cultural technology during the construction of collective ideas from the African continent. Digital technology and practices are essential for the current movement of collective ideas about the African continent, making them the focus of the project. The development of digital, global networks goes hand-in-hand with the development of locally specific digital cultures. To satisfy the tension between local digital culture and ever more globalized trends, exhibitions are taking place in Dakar, Johannesburg and Karlsruhe as part of the »Digital Imaginaries« project, which each explore the subject in a local context.

The project is a collaboration with Kër Thiossane, the independent center for digital art, and the Afropixel Festival in Dakar, the Wits Art Museum and Fak'ugesi Festival of African Digital Innovation in Johannesburg and the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe. This cooperation anchors the subjection into the specific locations and allows an analysis of the role of digital imagination, local specificity and digital media spaces in the formation of globally interlinked, contemporary »Africas«.
»Digital Imaginaries« is a joined project of Kër Thiossane, Wits Art Museum, Fak'ugesi, and ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe.
