Dark Wild Roses. Plants and Landscapes in the Art of Wilhelm Laage (1868-1930)

Exhibitions
Kaktusblüten (o.J.), Aquarell, 34,2 x 23,4 cm, Kunstmuseum Reutlingen.
The painter and woodcutter Wilhelm Laage (Stellingen near Hamburg 1868-1930 Ulm) captured in his works pattering raindrops, still waters, rugged rock formations, sunsets, his own garden, but also delicate blossoms and houseplants. About his attachment to nature, the artist wrote in his memoirs: "My gaze unconsciously saw and felt everything in the landscape and my innermost took that in."
He captured the irrepressible nature with its seasonal weather phenomena and play of light on canvas with powerful brushstrokes. Wilhelm Laage also carved in wood or drew on paper the colorful plants sown by man in the protected garden or placed for everyday enjoyment in the parlor at home. By reducing to the immediate characteristics of landscape and flora in his pictorial compositions, the artist created expressive forms that invite the viewer to linger and take a closer look in front of the works. The exhibition shows his homage to nature in over 70 paintings, watercolors, drawings, woodcuts and lithographs.
