The current special exhibition "Knopf dran!" (Button On!) casts light on the history of buttons that began over 6,000 years ago. At first they served as jewellery and, not least, as signs of affluence. But, in the 13th century, once the quality of the button fastener was recognised, the little round helpmate began its triumphal progress, not only exerting a decisive influence on fashion but also creating new professions.
The materials that buttons were made of are amazingly diverse, as are their shapes and ornamentations.
