The long-legged bed of Winsor McCay’s Little Nemo nimbly climbs over New York’s high-rises. Bob Kane’s Batman defeats criminals in front of Gotham City’s grim urban canyons. Tardi’s Nestor Burma chases crooks through dark Parisian alleyways. Upturns and downturns alternate in Will Eisner’s tale of the fictitious Dropsie Avenue: Since the end of the 19th century, the city has frequently inspired artists to create outstanding comics.

Cartoonmuseum Basel presents originals by comics artists from various eras and genres – works that are set in the city, or are about the city, or take the city’s appearance as their starting point. A wide variety of accompanying events thematise both the city as a social and shaped space, and how it is perceived in the comic.
